What is The Meaning Behind “Sunn Haandiye” by Ranjit Bawa?
Okay so you know that song “Sunn Haandiye” by Ranjit Bawa? Yeah the one that’s been stuck in my head for days. I was just looking up the lyrics properly and it’s actually such a straightforward but cute track. The whole thing is basically this guy pleading with this girl to just agree to marry him already, like that’s the entire vibe.
So the first verse are about him just laying it all out there. He’s like “hoje tere naal viaah” which is just “let’s get married today” you know? And he keeps saying “sunn haandiye” which is like “listen to me, please.” He’s saying his one and only wish is this and that everyone knows it. Then he compares her to this fresh, dewy thing saying her face is like a rose that can’t be compared to anything else. It’s all just this really direct and kind of desperate confession.
And then the other parts are him trying to convince her why they’re perfect. He says his suits match her outfits perfectly and that with her, he feels like a king beside his queen. It’s those classic Punjabi wedding song compliments. I love how he says he’s flying the flag of love just for her, it’s a bit cheesy but it hits different. The energy is just so full of admiration, like he’s totally in awe of her.
But my favorite bit is the last section, it paints such a picture. He’s describing her at her cousin’s wedding, with her bangles and everyone dancing. The whole village is celebrating because of her, basically. It’s so specific and visual, you can totally see the scene. And then he ends it again with that same plea, like “see? this is why, just marry me.” It’s such a fun, celebratory song about just being completely smitten and not being shy about it. The way Ranjit Bawa sings it, with that kind of rough, earnest voice, just makes it so much better.
